About AfriScore

Credit intelligence infrastructure for the markets traditional systems cannot reach.

AfriScore is a B2B credit decisioning layer that turns mobile money, airtime, and device data into explainable, compliant credit decisions for financial institutions across emerging African markets.

The problem we are solving

300M+
Credit-invisible adults in Sub-Saharan Africa
68%
Mobile money penetration across the continent
$100B+
Estimated annual credit gap

Traditional credit bureaus were never designed for these markets. They cover less than 5% of the population in most Sub-Saharan countries, leaving hundreds of millions of creditworthy individuals and small businesses locked out of formal credit — not because they are risky, but because they have no formal financial history to prove otherwise.

How AfriScore works

01

Ingest

Mobile money transaction histories, airtime patterns, and device metadata flow into the engine via a secure API — no traditional credit bureau file required.

02

Score

A calibrated ensemble model evaluates the applicant and returns a risk score, risk tier, and recommended loan terms in real time.

03

Explain

Every decision ships with SHAP-based feature contributions and counterfactual explanations — auditable, regulator-friendly, and borrower-transparent.

Engineering philosophy

Python, not Rust

We chose Python because the priority at this stage is iteration speed and clarity, not raw throughput. Rust remains a candidate for a future performance-optimized rewrite — but only once real institutional traffic justifies the engineering cost.

SHAP, not black boxes

African banks are regulated. OHADA and CEMAC require auditable decisions. A model that denies an applicant without explaining why is legally unshippable. SHAP gives every decision a reason.

Self-hostable, not cloud-only

Most African institutions have strict data residency requirements. If we cannot run inside your firewall, we cannot serve you. AfriScore is designed from day one to be deployed on-premise.

The team

AfriScore is currently led by its founder. We are actively recruiting a commercial co-founder to lead institutional partnerships and pilot acquisition across the CEMAC region.
